The book started out well, I liked so much but it's what's at the heart of it that matters and there were several errors serious enough to merit a one star rating. The first error that I noticed was the author attempted to separate the word of God from God. He advised us to leave the content (the Bible) behind for the application (God Himself). At first glance this might seem like a good exchange but there are a lot of pretenders to the throne out there. God's word is God to the degree that the apostle John called Jesus "the Word made flesh." Reading that word breathes life into the soul. It's the pretenders to the throne that are always trying to get us to ditch the word.Another serious problem is the author's teaching of flattery. For so much of the book he was promoting the understanding that we should get out doctrines from the Bible but I noticed that he didn't provide Bible texts to support this idea. That's because there aren't any. In fact, Psalms 12:3 warns that God will cut off flattering lips and Proverbs 16:18 warns that pride goes before a fall. We can believe in people's capacity to achieve (especially in God's strength) and we can commend their effort and endurance but praising the person for their traits is bad. Even modern science is backing this understanding. Researchers discovered that if they praised students for their intelligence they avoided situations that might make them look dumb and took mistakes as proof that they were not smart. Their performance deteriorated over time. On the other hand, students who were praised for their effort took on greater challenges and improved over time. It's too bad the author went off the rails like that, as I said before, the book has a lot of promise. He said a lot of good things but then he took some of the more important things back. That's happening way too often these days.
